2007 National Conference Sets Attendance Record

The 2007 SAWA National Conference in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida set new records for attendance. Two hundred and fifty SAWA members, sponsors and friends came together for four days in November to share ideas and concerns and to network with colleagues. A strong line-up of speakers provided valuable information on a number of issues including the Asilomar Accords, dog fighting and animal cruelty, executive compensation, financial development, board development, and the use of technology in nonprofit organizations. The AAA Five-Diamond oceanfront Ponte Vedra Inn and Club southeast of Jacksonville provided a popular location with plenty of leisure time activities. The resort offered
a spa, tennis courts and a championship golf course along with its beach. Thanks to Leona Sheddan, executive director of the Jacksonville Humane Society, and her staff for helping put together the conference books, duffle bag and badges. Leona and her team were invaluable to the conference planning committee. Plans are underway for the 2008 National Conference, which will be held at another spectacular resort, the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, November 9—11, 2008. Make plans now to join your colleagues in sunny Arizona for the 2008 National Conference.

  In Memory of Marilyn Haggerty-Blohm
SAWA lost a former board member, long-time friend and animal lover with the passing of Marilyn Haggerty-Blohm in New York on February 13, 2008. Marilyn served as executive director of the Center for Animal Care and Control under former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Upon her death, Giuliani issued the following statement: “Judith and I extend our thoughts and prayers to Marilyn’s family and friends. She assumed responsibility for a daunting challenge when she became executive director of the Center for Animal Care and Control—but as a result of her love of animals and her energetic dedication, thousands of abandoned animals were placed in loving homes with grateful families. She will be missed by all.” Marilyn was an accomplished dog trainer and an award-winning equestrian. She is survived by her two teenage sons and her husband, John Blohm. SAWA extends its condolences to Marilyn’s family and friends.

Kansas City Home to 2008 Management Conference
Kansas City, Missouri will be home to SAWA June 19-21, 2008, for our Management Conference. Kansas City is an energetic city of impressive boulevards, spacious parks and exquisite fountains. KC will keep you entertained with swinging jazz, eclectic cuisine, sports and shopping. A highlight of the conference will be a casual evening of fun with your colleagues at Kauffman Stadium where you will enjoy dinner in the exclusive Stadium Club and watch the baseball game between the Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco Giants. The first SAWA conference for managers was held in the 1990s. Since then the Management Conference has become a professional development and networking event. Sessions will be offered for everyone including administration, development and finance. Among the presentations planned are keynote speaker, Gregg Lederman, who will speak about how to build behaviors your employees will adopt and deliver to improve profitability, loyalty and results. Dr. Melinda Merck will give a presentation on “Forensics in Animal Abuse.” A panel discussion on “Shelter Architecture—What’s New?” will include many architects from around the U.S. who have done a great deal of shelter design and renovation work. Bill Littlejohn will address “Advancing a Culture of Philanthropy in Your Organization.” Breakout sessions on changes to the IRS Form 990 and on Human Resources Hot Topics will be offered. There will be many roundtable discussions offering you an opportunity to discuss those things most important to you. The conference will be held at the Westin Crown Center, a pet-friendly property. The Westin is conveniently located adjacent to Union Station and near Country Club Plaza, the Jazz District and more. Hotel reservations can be made now at 888-627-8538.   We’re Just Wild About Harry!

Many thanks to Harold (Harry) Dates, who has completed his term as president of SAWA. Harry’s dedication to animal welfare organizations is well-known. Harry’s term was marked by the best attended management conference and national conference in our history; the beginning of the development of a strategic plan for SAWA; and an expanded partnership with Hill’s. Although we will miss his strong leadership and gentle guiding hand, he will remain an integral part of SAWA. Cal Morgan, our newly elected president, hails from the Michigan Humane Society, where he is president and CEO. We know Cal will be a tremendous leader and will do a great job of continuing Harry’s SAWA legacy.

Hill’s Science Diet Expands Partnership with

A new, multi-year partnership with Hill’s Science Diet was announced at the SAWA national conference in Ponte Vedra Beach. Hill’s, the makers of Science Diet and Prescription Diet, share the ideals and goals of SAWA. Since 2002, the Hill’s Science Diet Shelter Nutrition Partnership has donated more than $50 million to shelters across the country, helping them save more than one million homeless pets. More SAWA members have joined the Hill’s Science Diet Nutrition Program than any other shelter feeding program. SAWA and Hill’s shared commitment to companion animals and animal welfare organizations will help improve SAWA’s scope, efficiency and impact.
